Workshop on Women in Materials Science, 06-07.06.2006, Krakow
Workshop on Women in Materials Science took place on June 6-7th, 2006 at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow. The organizer was the VIU-GM office (Prof. A. Czyrska-Filemonowicz, czyrska@agh.edu.pl, Dr Agnieszka Snyder: snyder@agh.edu.pl) The Workshop was supported by an international group of scientists and had 30 participants.
The goal of the workshop was to bring together the materials science community to discuss gender equality in different EU countries. The discussion contributed to improving knowledge of gender science and to improving gender equality in European institutions. To fit the needs of young female scientists the organizers offered to arrange child care for the time of the Workshop.
In addition to a roundtable discussion, workshop participants heard 8 speeches on topics including the situation of women in Polish science, gender mainstreaming, increasing the visibility of women in the international nanomaterials scientific community, and the male perspective on women in materials science. Abstracts of the speakers’ presentations were collected, published by the VIU-GM, and distributed during the workshop.
During the concluding discussion, participants agreed that future workshops should include more male participants, should arrange for individual exchanges in between workshops, and to create an internet platform for maintaining group contact on a high level. Participants also suggested combining Workshops with other Networks of Excellence and cross-marketing each others’ efforts.
The printed Workshop Proceedings was later distributed among the participants of the Workshop.
